GMC’s Family-Friendly SUV Lineup

GMC’s Family-Friendly SUV Lineup

Back in the day, station wagons were the way families got around. They were huge and had room for everything. The best part is that, on road trips, the kids got to sit in the back and wave and make faces at other cars going by. (Yes, you did – admit it.)

The sturdy SUV is the preferred mode of transport for today’s households. They’re stylish and comfortable. Big enough for mom, dad, Aunt Mildred, kids, kids’ friends, dog – check, depending on size. Room for stuff – big check. Waving out the back at other cars – sorry, no. Safety hazard.

GMC offers a varied line of SUVs that can accommodate whatever you pack into them. Plus, technology has improved considerably since the old days. And they’re considerably easier to park than that tank mom (or grandma) used to drive.

The sales professionals at Mullinax Buick GMC in Montgomery can show you the different models, explain the trims and answer your questions. Let’s look at a little background info before you visit the dealership and arrange a test drive.

The Terrain

On the compact end of the spectrum is the 2024 Terrain, a small crossover with seating for five (Aunt Susie is going to have to sit this one out).

It’s known for its comfortable interior and easy-to-use technology and is available in four trim levels: the base SLE, SLT, sporty AT4 and luxurious Denali.

Key features include a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, Traction Select System, rear-vision camera and GMC’s Pro Safety package that includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, following distance indicator and IntelliBeam, which detects lighting conditions and other vehicles and turns high beams on and off as needed. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Inside, passengers can enjoy premium materials from cloth seats and aluminum accents in the SLE trim to French-stitched perforated leather-appointed front seats in the in the top-end Denali trim. The driver gets a treat in the SLT and above: a heated steering wheel and front seats. Passenger seats fold flat for flexible seating options and the ability to transport objects as long as 8 feet.

The AT4 Lineup

The AT4 boasts an eight-way power driver seat and a Skyscape® sunroof. The full lineup looks every bit the part of rugged action hero with exclusive accents such as black chrome grilles, unique wheels and sleek taillamps, depending on the model.

The Denali

The Denali features heated second-row outboard seats and ventilated front seats for a more enjoyable drive. Rounding out the amenities is a Bose premium seven-speaker audio system.

Exteriors feature plenty of style plus, on trims SLT and above, a hands-free programmable power liftgate that comes standard.

If your family is the sporty type, check out the AT4 trim, which is ready for adventuring with a Traction Select system with off-road mode and a front steel skid plate.

Tech Talk Time Out

GMC is known for the high level of cutting-edge – and, more importantly, human-friendly – technology in its vehicles. Here’s a short list:

  • Infotainment systems: This ain’t your grandad’s radio. Vehicles such as the Yukon feature Google built in, Alexa built-in, Apple CarPlay compatibility and a range of apps that can provide weather updates, help you find parking and enable you to listen to your favorite audiobooks. The Yukon and Yukon XL let you keep the kids (or grown-up passengers) occupied with a rear-seat media system that features dual 12.6-inch diagonal high-definition color LCD touch screens mounted to the back of the front seats.
  • High Definition Surround Vision that uses multiple cameras that let you see a overhead view of your vehicle, plus rear-vision and front-view cameras. Larger and higher-level trims are equipped with additional cameras.
  • Super Cruise: This is the first truly hands-free driver assistance system that works on compatible roads and is available on the 2024 Acadia, Yukon and Yukon XL in Denali and Denali Ultimate trims.
  • The myGMCMobileApp: This app allows you, the driver, and up to seven family members (or friends you really trust) to access your vehicle and share benefits such as remote commands to start or stop the vehicle, lock or unlock it and activate or deactivate the horn. The app also includes a vehicle locator function, OnStar Smart Driver and Wi-Fi hotspot management.
  • Skill for Alexa: Part of the MyGMC app, this skill remotely connects you to your SUV and, using your voice, start or stop the engine, lock or unlock the doors and secure your garage.

The Acadia

The midsize Acadia comes in the same four trims as the Terrain – SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali. The SLE and SLT come with a 2-liter, four-cylinder turbo engine backed by a nine-speed automatic transmission. A 3.6-liter V6 is optional on the SLT and Denali trims and standard on the AT4. The AT4 is available as AWD only while buyers have a choice of FWD for the other trims.

The Acadia also offers a number of options and packages – for instance, a cargo package and a trailering package – that allow you to customize he vehicle for your family’s needs.

Oh, and with seating for seven, there’s room for Aunt Mildred.

The Yukon and Yukon XL

Welcome to the big leagues. The full-size Yukon and XL are GMC’s largest SUVs and are designed to provide plenty of room for you, your squad and all your stuff. It seats nine and sports a total of 122.9 cubic feet for the cargo alone.

Available in SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate trims, it starts with a 5.3-liter V8 backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission and moves up to a 6.2-liter V8 in the higher trims.

Inside, the driver and front-seat passenger can enjoy 16-way power seats with a massage feature. Moving up to the Denali Ultimate trim, everyone gets the benefit of a Bose 18-speaker performance sound system.

Outside, the AT4 features a front skid plate with an approach angle of almost 32 degrees while the Denali comes with up to 13 camera views.

Hummer EV SUV

At the top of GMC’s SUV pyramid is the Hummer EV line. The 2x trim starts at $96,550 and features two motors and an EPA-estimated range of up to 303 miles. Horsepower comes in at 570 and torque at 740 pound-feet.

The 3x and the Edition 1 have three motors, a slightly longer range, horsepower up to 830 and torque clocking in at a max of 11,500 pound-feet. Plus, these puppies can crabwalk.

It seats five and you probably won’t be picking the kids up from middle school in this (although your offspring might actually acknowledge you if you did). But if your crew is the adventurous type, the Hummer EV might suit your needs.
